restoration of historic structures ranging from state capitol buildings to archaeological sites. The analysis is conducted in a laboratory using an optical microscope and samples of the historic paint viewed in cross section. Using the Munsell System of Color as the standard reference, each pigmented layer is identified and a determination as to which, if any, colors may date to the historic period is made. For non-pigmented finishes such as varnishes, shellacs, metallic leafs, etc., a verbal description is provided. Other typical services include identification of lead content, correlation of Munsell colors to standard paint manufacturers’ colors or provision of Munsell chips with the report, identification of media type (oil, latex, water-borne paints, etc.), and photomicroscopy. Sample collection can be done by Mr. Arbogast on site or by the client, with instruction from Mr. Arbogast as to sample collection techniques.
