IRS Releases 2009 Federal Percentage Method Income Tax Withholding Tables On November 25, 2008, the IRS released advance copies of the 2009 federal percentage method income tax withholding tables [Notice 1036]. The tables are effective for wages paid in 2009. The withholding allowance amounts by payroll period have changed for 2009.The IRS has also issued the percentage method tables for determining advance earned income credit amounts. The wage-bracket tables for withheld federal income tax and the advance earned income credit will be included in IRS Publication 15, Circular E, Employer's Tax Guide. To view Notice 1036, Click Here.IRS Decreases Business Mileage Rate to 55 Cents for 2009The IRS has announced that the standard business mileage rate for transportation expenses paid or incurred beginning January 1, 2009, will be 55 cents per mile, down from the 58.5 cents per mile rate in effect during the second half of 2008. The rate for deductible medical or moving expenses will be 24 cents a mile, down from 27 cents. Note: The rate for providing services for charitable organizations is set by law, not by the IRS, and remains at 14 cents a mile [IR-2008-131, released 11-24-08]. 2009 Pension Plan COLAsThe Internal Revenue Service announced on Thursday, October 16, 2008, that the limit on elective deferrals to 401(k), 403(b), and 457 plans for 2009 is $16,500. For other inflation-adjusted retirement plan amounts for 2009, go to www.irs.gov/. 2009 Social Security Wage BaseThe Social Security Administration announced on Thursday, October 16, 2008, that the 2009 social security wage base will be $106,800.
