According to BSI, a standard is a published: "specification that establishes a common language, and contains a technical specification or other precise criteria and is designed to be used consistently, as a rule, a guideline, or a definition".
A quick and easy to use reference for which standard covers which topic is long overdue. In the list of frequently asked questions (FAQ) on the issue of international standards, the question "What topic does ISO zzzz cover?" is very near to the top. Equally, we are often asked questions like "Is there a standard to cover our industry?".
This glossary is intended to address these questions and many others. This serves a variety of purposes, from helping identify appropriate international standards, to providing official titles and descriptions.
We have broken the standards down by number for ease of use, and then within each page, listed them in ascending order. To idenify a standard, simply navigate to the standard you are seeking, or perhaps search using the facility provided.

What is ISO? What is BSI?
ISO is the International Standard Organization. Established in 1947, this is a non-government federation of national standards bodies from around 150 or so different countries.
BSI is the British Standards Institution, which is the oldest standards body in the world. It actually stems from a meeting of various industrial institutes in 1901 which created a long running committee for standards, which later evolved into the BSI as it is today. Incredably, BSI alone has over 20,000 standards!
